Winnie The Pooh In 1926 the book Winnie the Pooh was written by A. A. Milne and was based on his son Christopher Robin Milne and Christopher's stuffed animals. The original Pooh was an Alpha Farnell Bear given to Christopher by his father. Eventually Disney ended up with the rights to Winnie, made a film in 1966 and the rest is history.

6 foot Paddington The inspiration for Paddington was bought in Selfridges, a store in London, England by Michael Bond, who at the time was living near Paddington Station. The bear was alone on the shelf and inspired Michael to write several books in the late 1950's about a bear called Paddington from darkest Peru who stowed away on a ship and ended up at the Lost and Found Department at Paddington Station. He is known for his distinctive hat and coat, his Wellington boots, his love of orange marmalade and his sign that says “Please look after this bear. Thank you. ”. The first stuffed Paddington bears were made about 1971 by Gabrielle Designs and then in 1974 by Eden Toys.

Smokey Bear In 1944 Albert Staehle created Smokey Bear to use as a symbol for a United States Forest Service fire safety program. In 1950 a bear cub was burned in a fire in New Mexico. He required medical attention, was named Smokey and ultimately ended up at the National Zoo in Washington DC where he became the living symbol of the advertising campaign. Numerous toy companies have made Smokey Bears including Ideal, Dakin and Knickerbocker. He often has denim pants a belt buckle, badge and a yellow hat. He is famous for “Remember only you can prevent forest fires”.

Rupert Rupert was created in 1920 by Mary Tourtel. He has been in a character in the London Daily Express ever since then. He is known for his red jacket, yellow checked pants and scarf and white sneakers. He now has his own tv program and his own organization - The Followers of Rupert.

Fozzie Fozzie came into being with the Muppets Show in 1976. Frank Oz was the voice of Fozzie. Fozzie's favorite hobby is telling jokes “Wocka. Wocka. ”

Teddy Ruxpin Teddy Ruxpin is an Iliop, which is a bearlike creature. He was marketed in 1985 and became toy of the year for 1985. He was originally made by Worlds of Wonder, later Playskool and finally Yes! Entertainment. When he came to the market he was a unique product and a patent was applied for in 1987. Teddy Ruxpin was the brainchild of Robert S. Anselmo and Ken Forsse.

Berenstain Bears The Berenstain Bears were created by Stan and Jan Berenstain. They decided in the early 1960's to create children's books because of their two sons. The original book was “ The Big Honey Hunt ”, which was published in 1962. The original family consisted of Brother Bear, Mama Bear and Papa Bear. Sister Bear was added in 1974.

Bear in the Big Blue House Another Jim Henson Company creation is Bear in the Big Blue House which started in 1997. Bear is a seven foot tall shaggy orange bear. He and his friends(Tutter a blue mouse, Ojo the bear, Pip and Pop the purple otters, Treelo the green lemur and Luna the moon) star in a half hour program.

Little Bear Else Holmelund Minarik, the writer, and Maurice Sendak, the illustrator, combined to create Little Bear, I Can Read Books in 1957. Little Bear lives in Bear Woods with Mother Bear and Father Bear.

Care Bears The Care Bears originated as greeting cards in 1981, moved to Kenner Toys in the mid 1980s, The Care Bear Movie in 1985 and a cartoon show in 1986. Recently another line of plush Care Bears was released in 2002. These colorful bears each have their own color and sport design on their chest. They live in the land of Care-a-lot.

Yogi Bear Yogi and Boo Boo originally appeared on the Huckleberry Hound Show in 1958 and by 1961 Yogi had his own show. Yogi was named after New York Yankee catcher Yogi Berra. Yogi is “smarter than the average bear”. Yogi's voice was done by Daws Butler and Boo Boo's was done by Don Messick. Yogi had a girlfriend Cindy and likes to steal picnic baskets and annoy Ranger Smith. He sports a green pork pie hat and tie. Un 1979 Yogi's first movie was made- Yogi's first Christmas.

Baloo Baloo first appeared in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, which was finished in 1894. Disney released the movie The Jungle Book on October 18, 1967. This was Walt Disney's last animated film and it was completed after his death on December 15, 1966. The voice of Baloo, the laid back bear, in the movie was that of Phil Harris. Baloo is known for his song The Bare Necessities.
