Steiff Bears

Steiff is one of the oldest and best known manufacturers of plush toys. The founder, Margarete Steiff had polio as a child and was confined to a wheelchair for life. She became a skilled seamstress and owned a small factory. For Christmas in 1880 she made some felt elephants as presents. They were very popular and eventually became the major product of the Steiff company. In 1902 her nephew Richard made a jointed bear and he convinced Margarete against her better judgement to make 3000 of these for the Leipzig Toy Fair in 1902. None sold until almost closing time when a toy buyer from the US bought all 3000. By the end of the year they had sold 12,000 bears to the US market due to the popularity of Teddy's bear.

Poinsettia has a Xilion stone that replaces the gold-plated button in the ear and retails for $225.00.
